Quick Gun Murugun Entertains - Mind It!
I am typically on top of it when it comes to films, new releases and what’s hot about town. But I have to say that as far as this super film goes, I have dropped the ball. TWICE now! First in June, when it played at the IFC Film Center here in NYC and then again a couple of weeks ago, when the film released country-wide in India. Why is this happening? Part PR oversight, part too much to do and only one of me to cover it all, but whatever the reason, I will try to make up for it now.
I have five words for you: “GO WATCH QUICK GUN MURUGUN!” It’s funny, it’s charming, it’s cult and it’s a classic film which comes from a long tradition of TV spots for Channel V, a favorite channel of mine whenever I travel to India - or the UK, where my BFF has it on her satellite line-up, lucky girl! I got a chance to view it late at night, at IFFLA and it was one of the treats of a festival chock full of great films. So, what I mean here is it’s GOOD! And the added benefit of uttering ‘Mind it!’ every time someone pisses you off is priceless.
The film is directed by Shashank Ghosh and produced by Phat Phish Films, which I am rooting for a speedy release of Anand Surapur’s masterpiece ‘The Fakir of Venice’ starring Farhan Akhtar in his acting debut. If you plan to write in and argue that the first acting job of the talented director was in ‘Rock On’, I’ll prove you wrong. In fact, this is the film he was judged by when both Abhishek Kapoor and his sister Zoya wanted to see his acting skills…
A teaser below is one of the spots for the channel V series, which finally solved the mystery of why I came back from LA craving a pair of light, short cowboy boots. You’ll see… And so QGM becomes a trendsetter too. Those cute little boots are already the it item of the early fall. For the full film, if you are in the US, you’ll have to wait until it goes to DVD. I’ll keep you posted. If you find yourself in India, again, follow my advice, you’ll thank me for it. Oh, and don’t write to me about how the film is different from the YouTube link I posted… I KNOW!
