Kanwal’s Healthy Corner – Hot Chocolate

by Kanwal Ullah

If you live on the East Coast you may have noticed that it’s freezing outside! Closing out 2010 with a snow storm, I think it’s time to be prepared for the snow in 2011. Whether there is a blizzard outside, or you’re shoveling the snow, or coming home late from work, sometimes all you need is a steaming mug of hot chocolate to warm you and your spirits. Yes, not everything about winter needs to be cold! I hope you enjoy my recipe below for an easy, decadent hot chocolate.

  • 4 cups of organic 1% or 2% milk
  • ½ cup of cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup of sugar, more if you like your hot chocolate sweeter
  • 1TB. of good vanilla extract

Add the milk in a deep sauce pan. Place on medium heat. Once little bubbles start to form on the side, whisk in the cocoa powder and sugar. Once combined, add the vanilla. Allow the hot chocolate to simmer for a few minutes. Pour steaming hot chocolate into mugs. Top with marshmallows or whipped cream, enjoy!

Servings: 4

Tip: You can also make this for your mornings by adding a tablespoon of instant coffee to the mix!
